Customer’s issue

A beam application device that this customer delivered to Idaho in the United States was not performing well, and the end user complained that the device was the cause of the problem. The company promptly investigated the problem, but could find no apparent abnormalities in the device. The customer therefore surmised that the cause of the problem was to be found in the environment surrounding the device, but was struggling to come up with firm evidence to back this up. 。

Proposals from Ohtama & results

• We travelled to Idaho to conduct environmental magnetic field tests on the location where the device was installed.
• We measured 100 spots in a matrix on the location where the device was installed to gain an understanding of the magnetic field distribution.
• We changed the height of the spots with a strong magnetic field, and took measurements. From the calculated value, we worked out that the source of the alternating magnetic field was at a position of 0.9 m underground.
• Company B gave a presentation based on our measurement data, and it turned out that electrical cables had been buried at a position of around 1 m underground. It thus became apparent that these cables were generating an alternating magnetic field at a level sufficient to affect the device.
• This proved that the device was not at fault, and the end user retracted the complaint.
